LDFA: Student Exchange

The first student exchange took place during 1992 (Dubna students in La Crosse) & 1993 (La Crosse students in Dubna). My involvement began during the second exchange in the fall of 1993 when my oldest daughter applied for and was selected to participate in the 1994 exchange. I have since stayed involved and today am currently planning our 8th exchange. The continuation of these exchanges is made possible through the dedicated work of many. Every exchange requires boundless dedication of both students and their parents to produce the high quality program we set out to provide. Others who continue to contribute a great deal to the success of the exchanges are, Dave Bell & Gennadii Ososkov in Dubna and Pete Keeffe in La Crosse. Pete Keeffe also began his involvement the same year as I and is still very active today.

We have just completed our 7th exchange and once again feel it was a great success. As always everyone (students, families and the chaperones) are expected to work for his or her participation in the exchange. There truly is a lot of work but also many benefits and rewards. As one parent of a previous exchange recently put it, many benefits of student growth and maturity that are influenced from being involved in the exchange are often not fully realized until afterward, maybe years later.

Most families and students agree the work they are required to do during their participation in the exchange is well worth it. Especially, when they consider people and companies who get absolutely nothing from their monetary support fund much of what the students personally experience. We also continue to make the exchange possible for our Russian friends regardless of their family's financial condition. The last exchange we spent between $9-$10,000 on the Dubna students for expenses including travel, food, admissions, insurance, visa costs etc.

Our exchanges last two years. The first summer the American students travel to Dubna for about four weeks and the following summer the Dubna students come here for around 5 weeks. The planning and funding for each exchange also takes two years. The student applications for the 2004/2005 exchange have already been delivered to all the area high schools. If anyone would like a copy please e-mail me at: trussoni@mwt.net . If anyone would like to make a donation to our program please make your check payable to the LDFA Student Exchange and mail it to Bill Trussoni, P.O. Box 83, Genoa WI 54632. My telephone number is 608.689.2393 . Also, one of our recent Dubna "graduates" has put together a web site that you may enjoy. The web address is www.lacrosse-dubna.narod.ru .

We are always searching for people who are interested and willing to fulfill the duties of the chaperone. If anyone is interested in being the chaperone or knows someone who is, please contact us or have him or her contact us now. The next opening for a chaperone is for the 2006/2007 exchange. The chaperone is responsible for everything from the start of application process until the completion of the two-year exchange. Therefore those interested in the chaperone position would need to become involved now in order to be properly prepared for the 2006/07 exchange.

One of the major responsibilities of the chaperone is the fundraising. I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your help. Our annual rummage sale and car wash play an important role in providing the funds for the exchange. We are interested in acquiring any good rummage year around. Please contact me through the information provided above if you would like me to pick up any rummage you wish to donate to us. Also, if anyone wishes to make a monetary donation to our cause we will provide you a car wash/raffle ticket in exchange for every $5.00 donation you make. We are also in need of rummage storage space. If you have garage, shed or basement space available, please let me know.

Alex Leonov, one of Dubna students from the last exchange has put together three web sites that are very informational. The sites are: lacrosse-dubna.narod.ru , ldfa2003.narod.ru and ldfa2002.narod.ru . Alex is continually updating the sites so please save this info and visit the sites often. Very special thanks from all the students and myself to those of you who have been supporting us each year. It is very much appreciated and needed.
